Case study: Party garden ready for friends and family to enjoy

Thursday 26th May 2022

A family are looking forward to a summer of fun after creating an outdoor kitchen and dining area with the expert help of building materials supplier Southern Sheeting.

Liz Paterson is already planning a party for her children and school friends to celebrate the completion of her garden makeover.

Working from home for the past year due to the pandemic, the garden had become an important retreat for her and she decided it was time to turn it into an extension of her family home.

After carrying out major renovations to her three-bed bungalow, the garden was a sea of grass and building rubble. It was the final missing piece in creating the perfect family home.

Liz said: “One of the silver linings about working from home for the past year because of the Covid restrictions, was it helped me to fall in love with my home and garden in Hove.

“Getting out into the garden every day has made me happy every time and has been such an incredible mood booster for me and the kids. It’s also been a great place to explore for our new dog Fig.”

Now Liz has created areas for her three children, aged 13,11 and eight to play and a separate area for the adults to enjoy food and a glass of wine.

An outdoor kitchen and bar area is covered with Cedral cladding supplied by Southern Sheeting. Trex Composite Decking makes up the floor of the outdoor kitchen, providing a surface which is one of the most durable composite decking products on the market, also delivered by Southern Sheeting.

The kitchen and bar are equipped with a pizza oven, an outdoor fridge and a Big Green Egg barbecue. Food can be prepared on the worktop and the sink even comes complete with a hot water tap.

Next to the outdoor kitchen and bar is a seating area with Trex Composite Decking used to create benches and a fire pit which has been ingeniously built to look like a coffee table. Paving creates an area that can be enjoyed at all times of year and rattan furniture provides seating for guests.

Behind the entertaining area is graffiti art by Aroe, widely considered one of the most influential and innovative names in British urban art.

The transformation began in April 2021, when builders SJL Carpentry and Design arrived to dig up the garden and lay paving. Then followed the introduction of gas, water and electricity, as well as outdoor lighting. The ambitious project was completed by the end of May.

Liz said: “My Dad is Italian so we’re a very sociable family and we love getting together and cooking for family and friends.

“Every summer we throw an end of school party where the parents and kids come over to hang out in our garden together and then we all head down to the sea, which is only a few minutes away from the house, so this is going to be the ideal launch event for our new garden.

“I cannot wait to have everyone over to visit this summer and have such an amazing outdoor space to entertain people. After more than a year when it was really hard to get together with people, it’s going to be great to welcome them here.

“I’ve been working from home for the past year as a result of the pandemic restrictions, so I spent a lot of time in the garden and having a cup of tea surrounded by nature helped me to recharge. I’ve been getting into gardening and learning how to manage a coastal garden which comes with its exciting challenges.

“Southern Sheeting were absolutely fantastic to work with on this project. They had great advice and expertise about the decking and cladding I needed for the project. They told me exactly what I needed and even came up with ways for me to make the project less expensive. They were honest and delivered the building materials on time.

“Interestingly, our contractors who were renovating the garden, had all heard about Cedral cladding and Trex Composite Decking and are big fans of it. Visitors have been hard pushed to spot the difference between composite decking and real timber too.”

Duncan Kingston, Southern Sheeting, said: “This was such an interesting project that we really enjoyed being part of. It has been great to be closely involved with so many homeowners who are excited about their garden make-overs.

“The passion for their own projects is infectious and makes our jobs even more fun when we can offer solutions to help them achieve their goals.

“We know how fantastic the premium products are that we supply and what an impact they can have when used correctly.”
